This extended Marangu Route itinerary adds a crucial acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, significantly increasing your chances of a successful summit while keeping the comfort of hut accommodations. It’s the perfect route for first-time trekkers and those concerned about altitude, offering a well-paced ascent through changing ecological zones—from rainforest to alpine desert and finally to the snowy summit of Kilimanjaro.
Begin your Kilimanjaro journey at the Marangu Gate with a hike through tropical rainforest to reach Mandara Hut (2,700m). Spot monkeys and vibrant birdlife along the way.
Leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone with stunning views of the saddle and Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m) for overnight.
Spend an extra night at Horombo to adapt to the altitude. Take a short hike to Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge and return for rest and hydration. This day greatly improves summit success and reduces altitude sickness.
Hike across the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, entering the alpine desert landscape. Arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700m) and prepare for your summit attempt with an early dinner and rest.
Start your summit push around midnight. Ascend to Gilman’s Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) in time for sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.
Descend through the moorland zone, retracing your steps to Mandara Hut. Reflect on your journey and enjoy a relaxed evening.
Make your final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where a vehicle awaits to take you to your hotel. Receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your mountain crew.
